That warm summer night when I was younger. I remember watching some late night show…maybe M*A*S*H. We had that couch that pulled out to a bed and you let us sleep in the living room that night. The windows were open, the summer breeze blowing the curtains. You were laying next to us. You turned to look ay my sister and I with tears in your eyes asking us to stop getting so big. I look at my 5 children and think the same thing now.
Growing up, we never knew that money was tight. You hid that so well from us. Every year at Christmas time, those “big surprises” you did for us. You made Christmas magical. The fishing trips we did every May in Wisconsin. I remember walking down that long boardwalk that opened up to that beautiful prairie. We would go every night at dusk sitting on that wooded bench. You would make sure we were so quiet waiting for the deer to come. We would sit there for a while just watching the deer eat. Those memories are forever in my mind.
I am sorry for being so angry at you for being late to my softball games as a kid. I now understand that you rushed home from work as fast as you could to get there. I can’t imagine how I made you feel. I want to thank you for making me get a job at 15 and make me earn my own money. I want to thank you for showing me what it is to be responsible. Even as a kid I remember you never missed worked. You showed up every day, even when you were sick.
You, my mother, are the reason why I am who I am today. You are the reason why I am strong and independent. You are the reason why I am successful at my career and why I have 5 amazing kids. . You made me the person I am today and for that, I hope you are very proud as you have done a fantastic job.
I am proud to say how I raise my kids is everything you taught me. I have learned from the best. As I sit down at night, when my kids go to bed and I’m stressed. Wondering if I’m doing a good job or if I’m being to hard on them. I now know you did the same thing though you have never told me so. I am here to tell you, you did. More than you know. I love you mom.
